National Collaborative Service for Livestock Development in Kendari City

Udayana University (Unud), Andalas University (Unand), Halu Oleo University (UHO), West Sulawesi University (Unsulbar), and the Kendari City Agriculture Service collaborated to hold a community service program in Poasia District, Kendari City, on Monday, November 4 2024. This activity aims to support the development of goat farming in Poasia District and poultry farming in Abeli ??District, Kendari City, by utilizing organic waste as a more efficient and sustainable alternative to animal feed.

In this activity, Prof. James Hollyward, professor from Andalas University, said that the use of organic waste in Kendari City can reduce feed costs by up to 70%. He emphasized that Kendari, as the provincial capital, which is often visited by tourists, still has limitations in providing local food such as free-range chicken. "Here there are superior free-range chickens, and agricultural waste such as cashew nuts and sago which we can process as free-range chicken feed," said Prof. James. According to him, the use of agricultural waste is not only efficient but also supports the sustainability of livestock businesses.

Meanwhile, Prof. Gusti Ayu Mayani Kristina Dewi, professor from Udayana University, highlighted the development of goat farming in Poasia District. Based on discussions with local farmers, he identified corn waste as a potential feed ingredient that could be utilized further. The use of corn waste is expected to increase the productivity of goat farming without incurring high feed costs.

Through this program, collaboration between educational institutions and local governments is expected to strengthen the local livestock economy and create opportunities for livestock farmers to improve their welfare in a sustainable manner.
