Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Udayana University Holds Downstreaming and Feed Concentrate Production Demonstration for Pigs and Poultry in Petang
Badung, Bali – The Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Udayana University, through its Community Service Team, conducted a Downstreaming and Feed Concentrate Production Demonstration for Pigs and Poultry at the Tani Werdhi Ayu Pig Farmers Group, Banjar Lipah, Petang Village, Badung Regency, on Saturday (August 30, 2025).
This activity was designed as an effort to reduce farmers’ dependence on commercial feed with fluctuating prices while empowering farming groups to utilize locally available raw materials. This initiative aligns with the fact that feed constitutes the largest cost component in livestock production, accounting for approximately 60–70% of the total production expenses.
The event was opened by the Head of the Werdhi Ayu Farmers Group, who expressed appreciation to the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Udayana University for their continuous support. He emphasized that this training was highly beneficial as it provided practical knowledge on producing feed concentrate tailored to livestock needs by utilizing materials readily available around the farmers’ environment.
During the training session, the community service team presented materials on the concept of livestock feed downstreaming, local feed management strategies, and conducted a live demonstration. Participants were actively involved in all stages of the process, including selecting raw materials (such as litter meal and meat meal derived from broiler farming waste), calculating nutritional formulations, mixing procedures, and proper storage techniques to maintain feed concentrate quality and shelf life.
Approximately 25–30 participants, including pig farmers, village officials, and local residents, attended the event enthusiastically. They actively discussed cost-efficiency strategies and potential business opportunities arising from this feed innovation.
The Head of the Community Service Team, Prof. Dr. Ir. I Nym. Tirta Ariana, MS., IPU., ASEAN.Eng., emphasized that the program was not merely a technical training. “Our goal is to encourage farmers not to rely entirely on commercial feed. By producing their own feed concentrates, they can significantly reduce costs, maintain quality, and even open new business opportunities for farmer groups,” he stated.
As a follow-up, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Udayana University will provide continuous assistance—from small- to medium-scale feed production, feed quality testing guidance, to market access facilitation. Through this program, the Faculty aims to help the Werdhi Ayu Farmers Group become more self-reliant in feed production, enhance livestock productivity, and contribute to strengthening the rural economy in Badung Regency.
